What does he think about before a stage? What is he thinking about as he takes each shot? Why is he running that bag? How does he practice? What helped him make the leap from a mid-pack shooter to the guy who consistently goes home with trophies? Over the past couple of years, a few of the very best precision rifle competitors have started publishing podcasts. It would be extremely rare in any sport for the guys at the absolute pinnacle of the sport to take the time to host a podcast and openly share their knowledge, approach, and mindset with the rest of their community - but, we are fortunate in the precision rifle world for that to be true. Over the past few months, I’ve learned more from these podcasts than anywhere else, so I naturally want to share those with my readers so you can benefit from them, too! - [Secrets of the Houston Warehouse - Lessons In Extreme Rifle Accuracy](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2013/10/18/secrets-of-the-houston-warehouse-lessons-in-extreme-rifle-accuracy/) - Back in 1993, Precision Shooting Magazine printed a landmark article about the findings of a group of benchrest shooters who turned a huge Houston warehouse into a precision shooting laboratory. Since that time more precision rifle products have been released than the previous 10 years combined! So last year I started from scratch and built two twin match rifles. I’ve been running this - [The Cost of Reloading vs. Match Ammo](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2015/04/01/the-cost-of-handloading-vs-match-ammo/) - I regularly get asked by friends, family, and readers for rifle and cartridge recommendations. The answer depends on many factors, but it’s happened so frequently that it caused me to create a structured process to help someone narrow it down to a few great options. We tend to focus on the rifle first, but many - [How To Predict The Future - Statistics For Shooters Part 1](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2020/11/29/statistics-for-shooters/) - Many shooters have an uncomfortable relationship with math and aren’t impressed with fancy formulas. However, statistics and probability are insanely applicable when it comes to rifles and long-range shooting in particular. I have literally spent months crafting this 3-part series of articles specifically with the math-averse shooter in mind. I invested all that time because I strongly believe that understanding just a few basics can help us gain actionable insight, make better decisions, and put more rounds on target. - [Precision & Group Size - Statistics for Shooters Part 3](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2020/12/12/measuring-group-size-statistics-for-shooters/) - This is the final article in my Statistics for Shooters series, and it focuses on the application of statistics when it comes to quantifying precision and group size. It provides practical answers to some age-old questions: How many shots per group do I need? Should I exclude fliers? Is extreme spread the best way to measure my groups? What is the most effective and accurate way to compare groups between two loads? I spent more time writing this article than any other single post I’ve ever written! It challenges some common beliefs held by some in the shooting community, so I tried to carefully present the reasoning behind that in a way that was approachable to shooters who aren’t math nerds. It also contains a lot of practical tips. I firmly believe these concepts will help a TON of people in the long-range community. - [Muzzle Velocity Stats - Statistics for Shooters Part 2](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2020/12/05/muzzle-velocity-statistics-for-shooters/) - Part 2 in my Statistics for Shooters 3-part series focuses on how to analyze muzzle velocity consistency, which is critical for us as long-range shooters. This article shows how to apply the concepts from Part 1 to get more insight and make better decisions related to muzzle velocity. It provides practical answers to some age-old questions: Should we look at ES or SD? How many shots do we need to fire in a string? How do we get the most value from the shots we fire at the range? I spent an absurd amount of time arduously crafting this article and creating visuals so it was approachable by shooters who aren’t math nerds because I firmly believe these concepts can help a TON of people in the long-range community. - [Accuracy International AXSR Review](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2020/08/16/accuracy-international-axsr-review/) - I recently spent a couple of months behind Accuracy International's new AXSR rifle chambered in 300 Norma Mag, firing almost 500 rounds. I used to cinch a top 5 finish in a flagship, national-level ELR match, but it wasn't all rosey! This is my 100% honest, full disclosure, hands-on review of the AI AXSR rifle platform, with all the details you could ever want to know! - [Statistics for Shooters - Executive Summary](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2020/12/16/statistics-for-shooters-executive-summary/) - Over the past 3 articles, we covered a lot of ground! This might be a good overview or reminder for those that read each article or hits the highlights in case you missed one. - [Wyoming ELR Scopes & Mounts – What The Pros Use](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2020/09/05/best-elr-scope-and-scope-mount-and-rings/) - This article shows what scopes and scope mounts/rings the competitive rifle shooters were running at this year’s Nightforce ELR Steel Challenge in Casper, Wyoming. That is a one-of-a-kind, 2-day, flagship match with 20+ stages featuring targets from 720 to 2,091 yards. The average target distance is year was 1,180 yards, with 70% of the targets beyond 1,000 yards! When you’re reaching out to that kind of distance your scope and mount must be rock-solid! This article is based on a survey of 100+ competitors and shares what brands and models these guys trusted to make first-round hits. - [NF ELR Calibers & Cartridges - What The Pros Use](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2020/08/27/best-rifle-elr-caliber-cartridge/) - Over the past few weeks, I surveyed over 100 shooters who competed in this year’s Nightforce Extended Long Range Steel Challenge in Wyoming. I know a lot of you had questions about calibers, scopes and other gear guys were using, so I put together a survey, and the match director, Scott Satterlee, sent it to - [Nightforce ELR Steel Challenge](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2020/07/12/nightforce-elr-steel-challenge/) - A few weeks ago, I attended one of my all-time favorite matches: the Nightforce ELR Steel Challenge hosted by Scott Satterlee in Wyoming. It was quite the experience, with targets ranging from 720 to 2,091 yards and sustained winds over 30 mph! A few competitors measured gusts up to 50 or even 60 mph! Believe it or not, you can still hit targets in those conditions – and some shooters hit first round with surprising consistency. This Wyoming ELR match is the only match like it anywhere in the country. Because it is so unique, it isn't affiliated with the PRS, NRL, or other series, which means many shooters may not be aware of it and that is why I wanted to share an after-action report about it with my readers. - [Best Shooting Bags - What The Pros Use](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2019/02/24/best-shooting-bag/) - This article covers the shooting bags that the top precision rifle shooters in the country are running in long-range competitions, which has changed a ton in the past couple years! Check it out! - [Bullet Jump & Seating Depth: Best Practices & Conventional Wisdom](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2020/03/21/bullet-jump-and-seating-depth-reloading-best-practices/) - With so many events canceled and stores closed, what a great time to do some reloading! Over the past several weeks, I have been working on a series of posts that I'm very excited to finally share with you guys! This article provides a comprehensive overview of what most professionally published books and reloading manuals suggest about bullet jump and seating depth when it comes to precision rifles. I have a big stack of books on the subject, and I tried to combine the most relevant info from each of them when it comes to fine-tuning the seating depth of your ammo. - [How Fast Does A Barrel Erode?](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2020/03/24/how-fast-does-a-barrel-wear/) - This article focuses on how quickly the lands of a rifle barrel usually erode, especially for mid-sized cartridges that are popular in precision rifle matches. It also explains how many shooters try to manage their seating depth and bullet jump over the life of the barrel. These are topics don't seem to get much attention and are rarely discussed in any comprehensive format, so hopefully it provides some useful information and tips. The article also poses some questions that might make us rethink priorities when it comes to managing bullet jump, at least when applying the concepts to some specific shooting disciplines where you might fire 100-200 rounds over the course of a weekend. - [Bullet Jump: Is Less Always Better?](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2020/03/29/bullet-jump-load-development/) - This landmark article shares new, primary research that Mark Gordon from Short Action Customs has compiled over the past 2 years. He tested a wide range of bullet jumps in several rifle/load configurations, and this post shares the analysis of that data. Mark used a similar approach to the Audette Ladder Test and OCW method, but the goal was to not find the most forgiving powder charge weight, but the most forgiving bullet jump. He wasn’t looking for the specific bullet jump that grouped the best, but the largest window of bullet jumps that provided a similar point of impact. That means the rifle would be more consistent from the start of the match to the end of it or could shoot a particular kind of match-grade factory ammo really well for a longer period of time. Mark’s findings may seem counter to conventional wisdom when it comes to bullet jump, but a few national-level precision rifle competitors also support the idea, which I highlight in this post as well. - [Custom Rifle Action - What The Pros Use](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2018/12/29/custom-rifle-action/) - I recently surveyed the top ranked shooters in both the Precision Rifle Series (PRS) and the National Rifle League (NRL) to learn what gear they’re running in long range rifle matches. We can all agree that a 35gr bullet would fly much differently than a 80gr - [Remington 223 Brass Weight Variation](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2012/06/13/remington-223-brass-weight-variation/) - I recently weighed 153 pieces of once-fired Remington 223 brass that had all been full-length resized, trimmed to length, deburred, primer pockets uniformed, and neck turned. Here is the resulting data: Average = 90.8 grains Standard Deviation = 0.71 grains Average Deviation = 0.53 grains (average of the absolute deviations of the data points from the mean - [Best Reloading Brass: Comparison of Manufacturer Uniformity](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2012/06/15/best-reloading-brass-comparison-of-manufacturer-uniformity/) - Many handloaders believe an accurate load starts with quailty brass. The more uniform the brass, the better accuracy you can expect. So there are a lot of questions that commonly arise: What is the best brass? Should I use "once fired" or "military surplus" brass? Is quality of Lapua brass really worth the added cost? I - [Norma 7mm Rem Mag Brass Review](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2012/06/15/norma-7mm-rem-mag-brass-weight-variation/) - I've been using Norma's brass for the 7mm Remington Magnum lately, and thought I'd write a review over what I've found so far. Norma is a high-end, European brass manufacturer similar to Lapua. They use the highest quality raw materials, and have very narrow tolerances and tight quality control. I recently weight sorted a box - [Most Accurate Rifle Primers for Precision Reloading](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2012/07/02/most-accurate-rifle-primers-for-precision-reloading/) - What is the best primer? This is a perennial question for handloaders pursuing optimal accuracy, whether that is for a benchrest rifle, F-Class, or long-range tactical setup. The primer is likely the reloading component most shooters know least about, and when that is the case it is sometimes a good idea to just start by looking - [Lapua 223 Rem Brass Weight Variation](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2012/07/05/lapua-223-rem-brass-quality/) - I recently weighed 100 pieces of brand new Lapua 223 Remington "Match" brass, and honestly I'm disappointed. A few people have been telling me how good Lapua brass was, so I was simply expecting more consistency than what I found. It didn't stack up well compared to some Norma brass I weighed recently ... although the overall quality appears to be good. - [Practical Tips to Extend Barrel Life](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2012/07/09/practical-tips-to-extend-barrel-life/) - With the number of “overbore” rifle cartridges popular today, barrel erosion is becoming a hot topic. For example, competitive shooters using a 6 PPC typically replace a barrel after 700-800 rounds, and a 6.5-284 might also need to be replaced before the 1,000 shot mark. That means the cost to keep a good barrel on - [Creighton Audette's Ladder Test](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2012/07/13/creighton-audette-ladder-testing/) - Creighton Audette came up with a method for developing precision rifle handloads that has been referred to by many names: Incremental Load Development Method (ILDM) The Ladder Test 20 Round String Method Unfortunately many of Audette’s original articles aren’t very accessible, so I wanted to provide a few resources that help flesh out the method - [RCBS Rock Chucker Reloading Press Mounting Template & Dimensions](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2012/07/17/rcbs-rock-chucker-reloading-press-mounting-template-dimensions/) - I have needed the exact dimensions of both the RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme Press and RCBS Partner Press a few times, as I was working on custom ways to mount them (like this portable reloading press stand). A bullet’s velocity is one of the major contributors to its behavior, and if you don’t know what its velocity is, you may never understand that behavior. But knowing why the bullet behaves as it does, - [7mm Rem Mag Load Development Part 2: Audette's Ladder Test](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2012/10/19/7mm-rem-mag-ladder-test-results/) - The first step in load development for my new custom 7mm Rem Mag started with gathering the real-world velocities I could expect out of three quality long range bullets I was considering. I then used those velocities to compare the ballistic performance between those three bullets, as well felt recoil during the test rounds. I - [7mm Rem Mag Load Development Part 3: Optimal Charge Weight](https://precisionrifleblog.com/2012/10/19/7mm-rem-mag-load-dev-part-3-optimal-charge-weight/) - After I identified a promising range of powder weights using Audetter's ladder test, my next step was to use Dan Newberry's Optimal Charge Weight (OCW) Method to offset the "scatter node" drawback inherently present in the ladder test. After all, we’re trying to hit relatively small targets that are so far you may not even be able to see with the naked eye. While you might can get away with minor mistakes and still ring steel at short and medium ranges, as you extend the range those small mistakes or tiny inconsistencies are magnified. So, most things are important … but to differing degrees. This series of posts is taking a data-driven approach by using Applied Ballistic’s Weapon Employment Zone (WEZ) analysis tool to gain insight into how different field variables in real-world shooting affect the probability of hitting long-range targets. - [Tips & How To's](https://precisionrifleblog.com/category/tips-how-tos/) - These posts include specific tips and how to’s related to shooting and maintaining a precision rifle. - [Reference](https://precisionrifleblog.com/category/reference-downloads/) - These posts include reference materials I’ve created and find myself using frequently, as well as free downloads. - [Triggers](https://precisionrifleblog.com/category/rifles/triggers/) - These are all the posts related to rifle triggers. - [Powder](https://precisionrifleblog.com/category/ammo-and-handloading/powder/) - [ELR](https://precisionrifleblog.com/category/elr/) - These are the posts related to Extreme Long Range (ELR), which is a rapidly growing area of precision rifles where shooters are pushing the limits of what is possible with shoulder-fired weapons and engaging targets from 1 mile to 3000+ yards!!! ## Tags - [300 Win Mag](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/300-win-mag/) - [50 BMG](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/50-bmg/) - [Berger 105 Hybrid](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/berger-105-hybrid/) - [Lapua 139 Scenar](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/lapua-139-scenar/) - [Berger 140 Hybrid](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/berger-140-hybrid/) - [223 Remington](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/223-remington/) - [243 Winchester](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/243-winchester/) - [26 Nosler](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/26-nosler/) - [260 Remington](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/260-remington/) - [30 Caliber Suppressor](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/30-caliber-suppressor/) - [30-06](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/30-06/) - [308 Match Ammo](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/308-match-ammo/) - [308 Winchester](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/308-winchester/) - [30P-1](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/30p-1/) - [TBAC 338 Ultra](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/338-ultra/) - [5R Barrel](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/5r-barrel/) - [6.5 Creedmoor](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/6-5-creedmoor/) - The 6.5mm Creedmoor is mid-sized rifle cartridge introduced by Hornady in 2007. The 6.5 Creedmoor was purpose-built for match rifles from the ground up. It was conceptualized by Dave Emary, Hornady’s Senior Ballistician, and Dennis DeMille, General Manager of Creedmoor Sports and two-time NRA National High Power Rifle Champion. Their goal was to provide factory-loaded ammo that was 100% competitive with any High Power target shooting cartridge, including the 6XC and 6.5×47 Lapua. Its case is shorter than the 260 Remington, which allows you to load even the longest, high-BC bullets into standard .308 length magazines. It has a slightly larger case capacity than the 6.5×47 Lapua. It’s 2.825 inch overall length works well in short-action bolt rifles and large-frame AR-10 rifles. Measuring 1.920″ from base to mouth, 6.5 Creedmoor brass features a 30° shoulder, minimal body taper, relatively long 0.285″ neck, and uses a large rifle primer. Thanks to the outstanding selection of 6.5mm bullets available, and long-range capability with mild recoil and good barrel life, the 6.5 Creedmoor is achieving success in both the target shooting and hunting worlds. - [6.5 Creedmoor Match Ammo](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/6-5-creedmoor-match-ammo/) - [6.5x47 Lapua](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/6-5x47-lapua/) - [6mm Creedmoor](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/6mm-creedmoor/) - The 6mm Creedmoor is a relatively new cartridge, but has caught fire in the long range shooting world – and for good reason! The 6mm Creedmoor is an ideal cartridge for engaging targets out to 1300 yards. It has been one of the most popular cartridges used by the top shooters in the Precision Rifle Series for several years, because of the outstanding ballistics it offers when firing 105 to 115 grain bullets. It also has relatively low recoil compared to other mid-size cartridges like the 308 Win or even its big brother the 6.5 Creedmoor, which can help you stay on target and spot your own shots. More recently the 6mm Creedmoor has been adopted by other crowds, like hunters. In 2017, my 8-year-old daughter used it to kill two coyotes, two feral hogs, and a 140-class whitetail buck – all clean, one-shot kills. Hornady has started producing excellent match-grade factory ammo for the 6mm Creedmoor. Even for those of us that handload, it’s nice to have the option to run factory ammo during practice or to pick up a different load when carrying the rifle hunting. Overall, the 6mm Creedmoor is one of the best all-around cartridge options out there, for anything from precision rifle matches to hunting most North American game. - [6mm Dasher](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/6mm-dasher/) - [6mm Super LR](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/6mm-super-lr/) - [6x47 Lapua](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/6x47-lapua/) - [6XC](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/6xc/) - [7mm Rem Mag](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/7mm-rem-mag/) - [7mm WSM](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/7mm-wsm/) - [AAC Suppressors](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/aac-suppressors/) - [Accuracy International](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/accuracy-international/) - [Accuracy International AX](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/accuracy-international-ax/) - [Accuracy International Magazines](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/accuracy-international-magazines/) - [Adjustable Stock](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/adjustable-stock/) - [AI Chassis](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/ai-chassis/) - [AICS](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/aics/) - [AICS Skins](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/aics-skins/) - [Air Pressure](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/air-pressure/) - [Alpha Magazines](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/alpha-magazines/) - [American Precision Arms](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/american-precision-arms/) - [American Rifle Company](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/american-rifle-company/) - [American Sniper](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/american-sniper/) - [APA Rings](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/apa-rings/) - [Applied Ballistics](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/applied-ballistics/) - [Applied Ballistics Kestrel](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/applied-ballistics-kestrel/) - [Armageddon Gear](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/armageddon-gear/) - [Atlas Bipod](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/atlas-bipod/) - [AX50](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/ax50/) - [Badger Muzzle Brake](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/badger-muzzle-brake/) - [Badger Rings](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/badger-rings/) - [Barnes Bullets](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/barnes-bullets/) - [Barometric Pressure](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/barometric-pressure/) - [Barrel Burners](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/barrel-burners/) - [Barrel Erosion](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/barrel-erosion/) - [Barrel Fluting](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/barrel-fluting/) - [Barrel Length](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/barrel-length/) - [Barrel Life](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/barrel-life/) - [Bartlein Barrels](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/bartlein-barrels/) - [Beanland Custom Rifles](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/beanland-custom-rifles/) - [Benchmark Barrels](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/benchmark-barrels/) - [Benchmark Muzzle Brake](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/benchmark-muzzle-brake/) - [Benchrest](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/benchrest/) - [Benchrest Experiments](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/benchrest-experiments/) - [Berger 168 VLD](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/berger-168-vld/) - [Berger 77 OTM Target](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/berger-77-otm-target/) - [Berger Bullets](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/berger-bullets/) - [Berger VLD](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/berger-vld/) - [Big Horn Actions](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/big-horn-actions/) - [Binocular](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/binocular/) - [Black Hills Gold Match Ammo](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/black-hills-gold-match-ammo/) - [Blue Stock](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/blue-stock/) - [Boron Nitride Coating](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/boron-nitride-coating/) - [Bradley Cooper](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/bradley-cooper/) - [Broughton Barrels](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/broughton-barrels/) - [Brown Stock](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/brown-stock/) - [Brux Barrels](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/brux-barrels/) - [Bryan Litz](https://precisionrifleblog.com/tag/bryan-litz/) - Bryan Litz is ballistician, researcher and accomplished competitive shooter.
